PicNotch guide: crop, frame, save & session privacy
Make a framed photo with PicNotch
Use Postcard for perforated edges or Polaroid for a straight paper frame with a larger bottom margin. The checkerboard in the preview indicates transparency; it is not part of the exported picture.
From image to PNG
- Choose a local image or drop one onto the page. Work on one image at a time; dropping several files opens only the first.
- Choose a crop ratio, move the image, and drag the crop handles to frame your subject. The toolbar rotates in 90-degree steps, flips horizontally, or resets the crop. Reset does not clear paper settings.
- Adjust Paper border and Paper color. For Postcard, choose a perforation size; for Polaroid, optionally add a caption of up to 60 characters.
- Check the preview and output dimensions, then press Save postcard or Save polaroid. The result is a PNG download, not a shareable editing link.
Example: two versions of a trip photo
Open trip.jpg in Postcard. Choose Landscape 7:5, keep the subject away from the outer edge, and try a 6% paper border with Medium perforation. Save to get trip-postcard.png.
Switch to Polaroid, choose Square 1:1, adjust the crop, and add “Afternoon by the lake.” Save trip-polaroid.png. Switch back to Postcard to recover its settings and crop while the page stays open.
The crop ratio describes the photo area, not the finished frame. Paper borders increase the final dimensions; Polaroid adds extra space below even with Paper border set to zero.
Limits and quick fixes
Use a browser-readable image such as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF. Files over 40 MB or 60 megapixels are rejected. If an image will not open, convert it to PNG/JPEG or reduce its size locally and try again. GIF input exports a still PNG, not an animation.
The finished image's longest side is limited to 4096 pixels. A tight crop leaves fewer source pixels; the frame cannot restore missing detail. Long Polaroid captions shrink to fit a single line, so shorten a caption if it becomes hard to read.
If cropping does not load, check that the Cropper library from jsDelivr is allowed to load, then reload before choosing your image again. If saving fails, try a smaller local image and check browser download permissions. On small screens, scroll down for finishing controls and Save; on desktop, the divider can resize the preview panel.
Local editing, temporary session
The app processes the selected image in your browser; it does not upload that image to a processing server or overwrite the original file. Cropping code, fonts, and icons load from external providers, so local editing does not mean the page makes no network requests. See Privacy.
Both styles share the source image but keep their own crop and finishing settings during this session. Choosing another image clears saved crops. Reloading clears the editing session; there is no saved project or undo history to reopen. Download each version you want to keep before leaving.
For keyboard navigation, focus a style tab and use Left/Right Arrow or Home/End to switch styles. On desktop, focus the preview divider and use Left/Right Arrow to resize it.
